Inside United Poll: Greatest Ever United Player...
I've been a subscriber of United's official monthly mag for years (I reckon I've got me about 200 issues so far). And every couple of years or so, I await excitedly for the 'Greatest Ever United Player' poll. Le Roi has deservedly won it every time the poll's gone ahead, with an array of talented, brilliant and loyal United legends following him - the likes of Giggs, Best, Charlton and Law making up the rest of the top 5. This year's Top 10 however looks a little different...
1.
Ryan Giggs
2.
Eric Cantona
3. George Best
4. Sir Bobby Charlton
5. Cristiano Ronaldo
6. Paul Scholes
7. David Beckham
8. Roy Keane
9. Peter Schmeichel
10. Wayne Rooney
Since the last poll, Giggsy was some way behind Bobby as our most capped player. So now he has that feat well and truly nailed, as well as an extra trophy or two - a second Champions League included - you have no qualms in seeing him top the list. Eric second therefore (standard), Georgey third and Sir Bobby fourth. Happy with all of that.
Again, since the last poll, I'm not sure if we had even signed Ronnie from Sporting Lisbon. However some years later, he left his mark on United like no other player since Eric. So thanks to his 118 goals that helped us towards three titles, two League Cups, an FA Cup, a Club World Cup and a European Cup, you are happy to see him as our second highest foreign player on the list.
Scholes has to find his way on their sooner or later, as does Beckham, Keane and our greatest ever goalkeeper Peter Schmechal.
But why the FUCK is Rooney 10th!?!?! Where is Law? Robson? Duncan Edwards? Tommy Taylor? Bearing in mind this list was compiled and voted for about three months Rooney told the world exactly how he felt about the club that pay his wages, wanting to leave and play for a team that 'matched his ambition'. Who voted? Because something is not quite right here.
