2014/15 | Final Thoughts.

Final Thoughts. There were so many high hopes going into this season with a number of great players joining United, as well as a new world class manager who's track record would certainly suggest that he was the right man to lead us back to the top. Yet the inability of the big name players to instantly fit in and make the difference we expected, as well as all the chopping and changing in formation by the manager, meant our season never really got going. Injuries of course played a massive role in the slow start we experienced, but it should not have taken van Gaal until the end of February to finally figure out his best starting XI. A run of six straight wins spanning from February 28th to April 12th - including wins at Anfield and our first victory in the Manchester derby since 2012 - saw us play our best football of the season, but it was all too little too late. False hope was immediately installed with some people going as far as suggesting we could go on and win the league,

Remembering Georgie Best on what would be his 69th birthday

How overused is the word "legend" in football? When you consider that nowadays it is what's used to describe anyone who has played over 100 games for a club, then you feel almost embarrassed to call a player as great as George Best a legend. Superlatives aside, one thing is for sure - he is one of, if not the , greatest footballers to ever grace this country. Before Ronaldo and Messi banged in goals for fun on a regular basis, before Maradona did ridiculous things with a football that made people gasp with amazement, and before David Beckham thought he invented the celebrity footballer - there was George Best. As well as gaining legendary status on the pitch - most famously helping United secure their first European Cup in 1968 - he perhaps gained just as much fame (or infamy) off it. A heavy drinker and womaniser throughout the Sixties and Seventies, football came a distant third place in the latter years of his career. At the tender age of 28 he left United and thanks t

I'm sure you've all heard by now, but the manager was on one last night at the end of year United Player of the Year Awards. So for your enjoyment, here's Louis van Gaal's speech in full...

De Gea to hold fresh Manchester United talks

Image
Via  Goal : Goal.com today have claimed that De Gea, the subject of massive levels of speculation linking him with a move back to Spain to play for Real Madrid, remains unconvinced over whether or not he should sign a contract extension or push for a move away from Old Trafford; with talks over his future set to happen imminently. Read more below... David De Gea's agent is to hold talks with Manchester United this week about the goalkeeper's future at the club. The Premier League side has offered a lucrative contract extension to the Spain international, yet he is understood to remain unconvinced that his career will be best served by accepting it. Real Madrid regard De Gea as an obvious successor to Iker Casillas and, with United having allowed their player of the season's contract to run down to its final year, the Liga club hold a strong bargaining position. A couple of other factors are also thought to be part of De Gea's decision over whether to remain at Old Traff

Crystal Palace 1-2 Manchester United: Three thoughts

Image
1. Fourth spot virtually secured With the win on Saturday afternoon, followed by Liverpool's inevitable inability to beat the best team in the country , United all-but secured a place in next season's Champions League (well...into the play-off's at least). We are now six points clear with only two games to go, however United's goal difference (14+ over Liverpool's) means it will take some seriously freakish results over the season's final two weeks to see Liverpool and United switch places...in other words, United have achieved their goal of reaching next season's Champions League after a season's absence, while Liverpool and Brendan Rodgers completely capitulated under the pressure that was placed on them thanks to last season's remarkable second place finish. Of course, there will be plenty of 'what if's' for United as some claim we massively underachieved due to the millions we spent improving the side last summer. What if Di Maria and

10 year's after the Glazer takeover - the 'Green and Gold' has gone but the anger remains

Image
Via  the Telegraph : In this special report The Telegraph's Mark Ogden  looks back at the Glazer's takeover bid exactly 10 years ago today. The burning Glazer effigies and sea of Green and Gold scarves seem to have disappeared from Old Trafford, however the anger remains. And unfortunately, for all those still seething at the hostile takeover a decade ago, there appears to be no sign of the Glazer brothers going away. Read the full article here .
