VIEW: United vs Leeds. 0-1

“Well I didn’t
expect that, I must admit…”

So what did you expect, Sir Alex? A performance full of
determination and grit to convincingly see off our lowly yet despised rivals in
a passionate FA Cup tie? Well I think, given the circumstances, that was
more than fair assumption.

After all, apart from the usual romantic
connotations and supposedly innate desires associated with ‘the oldest Cup
competition in the world
®’, we were facing a team 2 divisions below us; that's 42
places lower (that’s right, I counted).

So if you've come on here expecting one of my typically apocalyptic and
utterly dramatic posts that have followed every blow-par performance this season,
i.e. the standard format of my 2009/2010 post-match blog, then unfortunately
(for those equally bitter) – or fortunately (for those sick of my monotonous
tone) – you will not find one here.

Because, quite frankly, I can’t be bothered; and a performance
and consequent result of the bullshit scales we witnessed yesterday
afternoon should be devoid of any worthwhile comment.

What I will say however, and the WAY I will say it, will be
in the oh-so lazy bite-size format, as I am honestly still emotionally and
physically (shouting, kicking the seat in front of me etc.) bruised from
yesterdays match.

Tactics.

This was probably the no.1 mistake of the afternoon. Wellbeck on the wings? Lets put it this way; if he's incapable of dealing with 3rd tier full-backs, how is he expected to cope in our League? Or in Europe for that matter? Undoubtedly the worst performer on the park, as he was simply unable to maintain possession or utilise it. I felt sorry for Fabio who, as with his mentor, Evra, was providing width and support for his winger; yet Danny was a lost, wasteful, gangly soul to Fab's effort and ambition to push forward. Also, surprisingly, Obertan looked (almost) equally shocking on the opposite flank. In the first half, there was no end product and no creativity around the area, as he was successfully shut out and prevented from playing.

Shot.

Honestly, can’t remember…the non-us shot would probably Snodgrass’s cross-bar bound freekick towards the end. Other than that…what? The unsuccessful goal mouth scramble at the end? Rooney's skied effort, again, in the closing minutes? Our experienced and highly-capable front two should be ashamed of themselves.

Away Support.

To be fair: f**king electric. They brought around 9,000
people to Old Trafford and absolutely dominated OUR stadium. For a team to do
that to such dramatic and powerful effect – especially one of our most hated
rivals – is soul destroying.

Moan.

(I know I said I wouldn’t bother doing this, but it has to be
addressed in some way.)

At the risk of sounding like I’m analysing and therefore contradicting my original lethargic attitude, I’ll just sign off with: yesterday, it didn't happen and worryingly enough it never even looked like it would. The ‘Cup upset’ tag that will undoubtedly be placed on the result will not do the reality of the event justice. In terms of the bridge in class, we are unable to hide behind the ‘we fielded our youths’ excuse, as it was evident with the number of full-internationals on show - including nearly £60million worth of attacking threat. But perhaps most disappointingly was the lack of passion for the occasion. Where the f*ck was the heart? Especially from those United youth products – Gibson, Wellbeck, Brown and Mr. Manchester Neville – to show those less knowing what Leeds at home was all about? It was absent. As was the performance, as was our pride, and as was our name in the 4th round pot. A horrible show, but as always, we'll never die.

On a final pessimistic note; last year we played every single game we could have played in, except 1: the FA Cup final. This year, for the first time since 1986, we have not even made it past the 3rd round. Not conclusive, of course. Just interesting.

And for all those charming ‘UNITED ARE THE BEST’ fans who
are unfortunately blinded by the red-tint covering their eyes and who think it’s only me
who has a sadistic vendetta against our team, please read a ‘proper’ blog for further confirmation that, shockingly, things aren’t actually as rosy this season as
we’ve become accustomed too:

  1. Having been to Old Trafford in the late 70`s early 80`s what the f### happened to your place.
You could hear a pin drop in the Stretford the whole game and what an ugly bunch you lot are. 9000 Leeds took the piss all afternoon and the players played you off the park. Soul-less crap of a ground.

  2. In fairness to you,I think your away following are just as passionate as our lot. Fantastic day to be a white and I can't wait for more of it when we're back in the Premier league. Surely you must agree that games like that are far more meaningful than games against Wigan etc?

  3. I can't say anything other than fair play to the Leeds Scum. They well and truly (and deservedly) enjoyed their cup final.

  4. What a shame that most commentators have completely missed the point, and painted yesterdays win by Leeds over their bitter rivals as nothing more than the shock of the round.

Those whose loyalty has remained firmly attached to LUFC during the nightmare last few years see it for what it really was. The Red Devils getting dumped unceremoniously from the competition by local rivals who have this season re-discovered their identity and potential, and are determined to play their way back to the top level of the English game.

The shock merchants continued (quite unfairly) to make much out of how the result was more to do with United’s internationals having a bad day at the office than the hard working Leeds players doing what they do week in week out. Well, for the record - Wes Brown never has been and never will be anything more than a mediocre fringe player. An England international he is not - and Leeds exposed him as such for the watching millions to see.

Leeds did not do anything more than they have all season - played fast exciting football. It was not a blip, and any mention of luck is more insulting to the players on the park than was the timekeeping suggested by Sir Alex.

Which brings me nicely to the man himself, and two points I want to raise about his unbelievalable arrogance on the day! The first is that once again we have to suffer him whingeing about lack of time added. Well, I for one would have been happy to keep the game going for as long as he liked - because on the evidence the result was never in doubt, only the scoreline. Secondly, Sir Alex didn’t have the balls to face the camera’s and acknowledge that his team had been well beaten – preferring instead to hide in the dressing room throwing his toys out of the pram. In some ways it’s quite comforting to know that when Leeds do make it back to the top flight we’ll find some things have not changed!

  5. Wes Brown.... is he Ferguson's love child? He is a liability, so was delighted to see him play, but believe he should have been sent off.
To make matters worse regarding your wingers, we had a right footed midfielder playing left-back and you couldn't even exploit that!!
Delighted with the result, just hope we can repeat it at White Tart Lane...maybe even score 2!!

  6. As I said in the last post. A false dawn. Utd need signings and they need them quick. Imagine if Rooney was to get injured! You would be completely fucked.

  7. Fair play to admit we sang you off the park. Olt Toilet has been diluted by one game a season plastics and the Sky Sports brigade.

A soulless multi-national company, that just happens to play football.

  8. Alot of Anonymous's...what's that about??
At the end of the day: Yes we were average-to-shit, Yes you defended ridiculously well after your goal (which, don't forget, will probably go down more as a United mistake rather than an astute Leeds finish), and above all, YES you lot deserved the win. I'm not taking anything away from it, but the reality is I think I speak for alot of fans when I say I would happily get knocked out early from the FA Cup and be booted out by City in the League Cup if it means being stronger, fitter and very well equipped for title number 19/no.4 in a row...of which don't forget, we're only 2 points off the top.
And if Rooney get's injured we'd be fu*ked? Please. Evra's been far more important to us this season, and I feel the impact of Valencia on the wing is equally as important as his (Note: the dimension he added yesterday when he came on; not starting him was another Ferguson mistake). We've coped without Rooney.

  9. "A soulless multi-national company, that just happens to play football"
...I think after football you missed out "to the and consistently win things (even when they've been seemingly financially f*cked over by disloyal Yanks) rather than crumble - unable to recover from the dizzy European Cup Semi-Final heights - and instead drift into lower league obscurity..."

  10. Mark my words, this is a good result for us. We will have a free gameweek when everyone else plays, allowing us to make a full assault on the epl.

  11. Dear Cockney Red

You have a great blog, but why don't you moderate comments and keep the enemy out? The last thing I want too see is a mob of triumphant Leeds supporters on a red blog after such a terrible day, having walked around in front of the TV in a helpless frustrated rage after watching another skied-and-wide-effort from Gibson, another moment of panicked fear of the fray from gangly-and-spindly Danny Welbeck, another Berbatov-shaking-his-head-instead-of-actually-doing-something episode, and another two-reds-on-the-same-ball-so-it-bounces-to-an-unmarked-Leeds-player-because-we-play-like-total-strangers situation.
Of course they take the opportunity to heap even more scorn, bile and spite upon us. Because they didn't have around 15 shots way off target, they had a well prepared, settled, physically tough cup eleven who worked together as a team should, and not one single primadonna among them. We already knew that and yeah, we could fancy having a bit of that too, but we don't need them to rub it in our faces... So we've won the league 18 times and the last three to boot, we can let them have a laff? Not. Sharing our desperation, hair-pulling, shouting and mourning is ok, being skewered again on a red site is not ok.

  12. I completely agree mate. Tbh I haven't worked out how to moderate the Scum-fuelled comments yet. The best I can do now is delete the gob-shite AFTER it's already gone on, but that's obviously not idea. Where are all the United comments anyway?? That's what I'm wondering.
But generally, great comment Oslo Red. Thanks for reading.

  13. Mate, was at the match too and totally don't wanna dwell on the shitness of the whole thing. As for the comments from the scum, it's a bit embarassing how they're all jumping on their own white-arse bandwagon after one goal. Lets let em have a 'laff' though as Oslo red so nicely put it. We're reds for a reason, because we're the best.
Great blog though, really like your style. Well done mate.

  14. Totally agree with anon above... your style really reflects what I think most reds want to read. Game was a shambles and agree with your points on Fergie's placement of all those rubbish youths... though Fab was, well, Fab. Keep up the great blog. Really enjoy reading what I consider, a proper point of view.

I quote you 'We're reds for a reason, because we're the best'. That is the definition of a Glory Supporter.

  16. I wrote on the 5th January at 17:06 and said nothing of the sort. Get you facts right son...we all know how important those are, don't we Rafa?
