Champions League day 4: six things that could happen tonight.

First things first, congrats to Wayne and Colleen for finally popping out baby Kai. Hopefully the kid will be able to look after himself by the weekend so that Wazza doesn’t have to miss the Chelsea game (well, we’re all thinking it aren’t we!?). Thankfully, due to the circumstances surrounding tonight’s game, his absence shouldn’t really leave us into too much of a Russian pickle. We beat them in Moscow without Rooney and without moving into an untouchable gear (a common occurrence this season), so I can’t quite see them suddenly replacing their players, playing-style and manager – ok, manager maybe – by tonight to dominate at Old Trafford...although I seem to remember Wolfsburg not doing too badly when they turned up.

Surely another formulaic, modest encounter is on the cards tonight, but still, here are a few key bits to be aware of:

We could qualify…

If we beat CSKA and Wolfsburg fail to beat Besiktas, our 12 points from 4 games will be enough to see us top the group. Luverly.

…or CSKA could f**k it all up.

Highly unlikely I feel, but defeat tonight will leave us only 1 point ahead of Wolfsburg if they win. When you reconsider our absentees and slightly unfamiliar, potentially unreliable back-line and strike-force, then it could indeed turn out to be a shockingly bad night at the office.

Obertain could start.

We could see a first start for the promising Bordeauxian (…?) and maybe an opportunity for him to eradicate his miss against Blackburn to reverse the early ‘pretender’ tag that’s so easily been slapped on him.

Berbatov to be tried and tested as a lone striker.

His hold-up play and control is undoubted, but his ability to find space in the way someone like Ruud did so effortlessly is something he still needs to prove in order to be recognised as world-class striker.

Or he could be partnering Macheda.

I’d love Kiko to start tonight. After an impressive and ‘do believe the hype’ style performance in the Carling Cup last week, he deserves another game like this where he can show-off his flair as the pressure wouldn't be too hard for an 18 year old to handle…yet again, this is the boy who handled coming on for us when we were in desperate need of a winner in one of the most important League games of the season; so this should be nothing more than a stroll in St.Peter’s square for the Italian.

Madrid could be in delightful amounts of trouble…

Another Milan defeat tonight will see them severely needing to win their last 2; including a challenging little trip to Marseille. If Madrid fail this season to win as big as their spending spree determines they should, I will genuinely restore every ounce of faith I lost this summer every time Perez flippantly opened his cheque book to show the world just how shallow his team are.
