Manchester United 3-1 Club Brugge | Three thoughts

1. Memphis

What a perfect performance from the new-boy. Two excellent goals (he was unlucky not to get a hat-trick), and he sealed the night with the vital cross that met the mop of Fellaini - a highly important goal that has enabled us to go into the second leg with a two goal cushion.

United fans have been waiting for this sort of performance for a while. Not just from Memphis, who up until last night hadn't quite set Old Trafford alight with his skill and flair as we had hoped following his signing from PSV in July - however the sort of dominating performance from a young, gifted, passionate individual that we have been longing for since Ronaldo left in 2009.

There is no point dwelling on the Di Maria saga any longer - that is all in the past - however for me the disappointment that it didn't go according to plan after his big-money move from Real last summer outshines the bitterness of his exit earlier this month. With Di Maria's arrival United had hoped for a return to the free-flowing, exciting football that had been lacking in our game for years, however the Argentine only offered glimpses of his brilliance rather than a consistence stream of beautiful football that we hoped would carry the team forward. In truth, he just didn't seem interested.

In contrast, with Depay we not only have a talented individual but a hungry player who is eager to impress while giving his all for the team. And that, I feel, is the United way.

2. Fellaini

Great to see Fellaini back in the side and doing what he does best - making a nuisance of himself and confusing the hell out of the opposition defence who simply have no idea how to deal with him.

As soon as the big man came on there was the usual/obvious change in approach, with United lofting the ball up towards him at any and every given opportunity as we sought to scored the all-important third goal. It doesn't always work, however when it does you have to credit Fellaini for his excellent movement inside the box, and the manager for deploying his not so secret weapon to perfection.

3. Chicharito

How great was it to see Hernandez back in a United shirt?? We've certainly missed our Littel Pea.
