VIEW: United vs Bursaspor (a). 3-0
Van der Sar 6. Little to do other than save Evra's arse in the first half after he gave the ball away and piled the pressure on Edwin, who - as you would expect - kept his ground and saved well.
Rafael 6. Did well to keep his place after a fairly average display against Spurs at the weekend. Still, I suppose if he was able to contain the quite good Bale at the weekend (something that his countryman and the world’s best right-back, Maicon, clearly couldn’t do), then why not play him against a strike force that had scored a mighty zero goals in three Champions League games this season?
Smalling 7. After 5 starts already this season, I struggle to find a negative aspect of his game. Solid at the back and confident coming out of defence…sounds a bit like Rio.
Vidic 6. Rock solid as usual. The perfect mentor for Mr. Smalling. He's been involved in three of our four Champions League games this season, and with no goals conceded so far in the competition, it's no surprise that he's been involved in most of the matches.
Evra 6. Hmm… His main contribution was losing the ball in a dangerous area and consequently providing Bursaspor with their best move of the game. As good as he is coming forward, he's still lacking in confidence. It's so strange to see our two best players from last season (Evra and Rooney) being almost so insignificant this season.
Fletcher 6. It’s weird for a game so heavily dominated in the centre of the park that none of our midfielders stood out. I guess it just highlights the lack of quality that they were faced with? Anyway, I reckon a six would suffice for Fletch, with his main contribution, of course, being his goal. Even when he received Carrick’s ridiculously accurate pass, he still had a lot to do to bury it into the far corner. But the negative of his night was when he picked up an ankle injury that, although it ended his game after around half an hour, it hopefully won't keep him out for too long.
Carrick 7. Seven might be a tad generous, but when the fact he’s starting to pass like the Carrick of old – see his amazing assist for Fletcher’s opener – is taken into account, then why not give him a cheeky confidence boost? (yeh that’s right, he DOES read ‘Following the Trawler…’ for all the latest United news, views and influential match reports).
Scholes 6. Again, as with Carrick, a pretty standard ‘bossing the midfield’ display against a side where their midfield was easily taught a lesson in football. But it was his own assist that stood out. His reverse pass for Obertan’s goal was brilliant and, in terms of it’s affect, standard Scholes.
Nani 6. It’s always difficult to pick out any negatives after a performance of such assurance, but when your best player hobbles off after 29 minutes, suppose the negative speaks for himself. Nani’s stats, with regards to his growing influence, speak for themselves: 20 assists and 10 goals in his last 29 starts for United. We know he’s out for the weekend game against Wolves. Let’s hope his absence from the side ends there.
Obertan 7. What a goal. That is the sort of thing we have been waiting for from the kid. We’ve seen the trickery, pace and confidence to strike from distance, and finally the goal to match the hype has come. Well deserved and hopefully something he will build on.
Berbatov 6. As with his performance at the weekend, it was another hard-working display where he was constantly in the think of every attacking move. No goals since the hattrick against Liverpool ** days ago though…should we start getting worried?
im starting to like this blog more and more, great sense of humour
