The Week In Football...
Well HELLOOOO my bloggy-woggy-followers! My oh my it HAS been a while. Classic token old chestnut of an excuse, but lits no computer has been at my disposal. But alas, I’ve still had my eager peepers planted firmly on the world that we are all so devotedly encapsulated by. So what has happened over the week, according to United? Well…
On Wednesday 10th, we were scheduled to take on the mighty ones at wastelands. It didn’t happen. Weird, cos it was scheduled and everyone was there - waiting for something to happen. But it didn’t. Weird, again, because aren’t massive citeh supposed to have come into a bit of money recently? And haven't they done ever so well with it? Unlike a team who have never had money and don’t know what to do with it, they’ve heartily invested it into hundreds of millions of pounds worth of striking talent who’ve been banging the goals in all season…...oh.
But just to f**k things up, Raf annihilated the twat from Argentina. So the shocking 0-0 no-show aside, the young’un done us proud.
Oh. And Liverpool’s revival after the Chelsea game and Torres’s reinvigoration continued as they struggled to a heroic 1-1 draw at Wigan.
On Thursday 11th, the press and fans all over were shocked that the massive game didn’t happen: with the word why preceding ‘did city play like that?’ and the word what preceding ‘a load of shite’. Nice to see that our sixth draw (out of 12 games) this season was blamed on the lack of ambition on the part of the opposition. Press reaction, if anyone cares, is nicely collated here.
Then, on to the weekend. Well, clearly the mid-week break didn’t do United any good at all, as - truth be told - we got proper by battered by Villa’s kids. Berbs was poor (not as bad as he had been cruelly rated), Hernandez was worse and buddies Park and Evra on the left had an absolute shitter, as we deservedly - and rather ‘luckily’ - only went 2-0 down. But queue our two super-strikers: Macheda and Chris Smalling (who officially is the only reason I'll be watching tonight's pointless International friendly against France), as we tore shit up and got it back to 2-2.
Draw number seven (fifth out of six on the road), with the always enjoyable touch of 'Nou Camp ’99' about it, felt ever so slightly sweeter than our previous draw.
And thankfully for us, the dramatic drama at Villa Park was enhanced as the weekend got better. Not quite perfect - as Everton failed to hold off Arsenal at Goodison, losing 2-1 - but pretty effing sweet.
Citeh’s challenge (which has now officially been realised to be built up by their early false promise) had another brilliant goalscoring display…ahh I’m sick of all the sarcasm. They drew. 0-0. Again.
But Brucey’s boys, with useful edition Danny Welbeck chipping in, did a turn on ‘100% favourites best team in the world’ Chelsea; beating them quite comfortably and so very shockingly at the Bridge (only their fourth home defeat since 2004!). A 3-0 battering that could’ve been six showed the entire league that this title, with still only a third of it gone, IS open. And contrary to the boring, complacent and inevitable belief that goes with one team playing quite well in the opening four games of the season, Chelsea aren’t walking away with it. Malouda and Drogba, so dangerous at the start of the season, have quietened down, and Terry and Alex are out; with no replacements in central defence.
As for us? Unfortunately, the draws are still coming in rather thick, and as long as they are overshadowed by the unbeaten status of our season 13 game season, we’ll ride it out, wait and fight patiently while Giggs, Rooney et al start to return. Of course, we'll continue to…erm…draw while the others around struggle for form and fitness. Ah, the new-found negativity of a recession-hit/debt-ridden Premier League fan! Am I missing anything?...
Oh. And Liverpool’s revival after the Chelsea game and Torres’s reinvigoration continued as they struggled to a heroic 2-0 defeat at Stoke.
