Brian Woolnough's pointless attack on Nani

Check out this ridiculous and massively inaccurate pile of sh*te by Brian Woolnough in yesterday's Daily Star (the bits highlighted are points I'll get to later...) :

Manchester United’s Nani must be the most annoying player in the Premier LeagueA wonderful talent but oh, what a great big baby!

This is Cristiano Ronaldo re-visited when he first came to English football. Or Didier Drogba at his embarrassing diving bestAll the good, bad and ugly sides of Nani were on view during United’s 2-0 win over Spurs on Saturday.

Doesn’t he realise how stupid he looks every time he rolls about on the ground as if shot by a sniper’s rifle? You can’t be injured every time you are touched or tackled.

In the first seconds down he went clutching his leg after an accidental clash. Then he wanted a penalty, throwing himself to the ground like a spoilt brat when it wasn’t given.

He holds his hands to his head as decisions go against him and always goes down too easily. One of the most sickening sights in our game is a player shrieking in make-believe pain when tackled.

Nani, like others, anticipates the challenge, and is screaming before any contact has been made.

Perhaps referee Mark Clattenburg would have given a penalty before United’s controversial second goal had it not been Nani. That’s what happens when word spreads you are an alleged diver and cheat.

Nani was definitely touched by Tottenham Younes Kaboul and then made a meal of it, throwing himself to the ground seconds later.

There has been a clamp down on cheating in the last two seasons with players being told by their captain and teammates to stop the simulation.

John Terry at Chelsea has definitely had an influence on Drogba, who is a much better player now he stays on his feet. Ronaldo definitely learned the lesson of his ways before he left for Real Madrid.

Someone at Old Trafford needs to get hold of Nani and tell him to stop behaving like a big girl.

The Portugal star has such talent. Skill, quick feet, tricks, acceleration and goals – yet his reputation as someone who goes down too easily is what people are talking about.

If only he would concentrate on what he’s good at. Against Spurs he produced a pin-point free kick for Nemanja Vidic to head the first goal.

Then a second-half run ended with an outstanding left-footed effort that clipped the bar. His quick thinking allowed him to score the second goal, albeit controversial.

Nani the footballer is worth watching. Nani the big baby is what he is at the moment

If he doesn’t realise the damage he is doing to his reputation than he has no chance in the Premier League. If he listens and learns and allows his football to do the talking he can become a big star.

It’s his choice. Big girl or big star?

  1. I'm a Man Utd fan and I totally agree with this assessment. He is incredibly talented but the biggest moaner and groaner. The only Thing I would diagree with is that he didn't go down too late on Sat. If you watch it closely his ankle was clipped and he had no choise but to go down. it was a clear cut pen.

  2. obviously his a critic... but why not look at all the great attributes Nani is certainly obtaining. He his most definitely an improved player. The fact of the matter remains that any football player should play by the whistle thus implying that a goal is a goal. About the penalty decision, we all know it was one and majority of players goes on dramatically like they deserve an Oscar. So why attack Nani then? attack others aswel or why not attack the whole football world about complaining....
Shame Mr. Woolnough all you done in the article was to contradict yourself!

  3. @ ebo.j:
Yeh that was exactly the point I wanted to make by posting it. He's - on one hand - completely ignored and rejected all of Nani's hard work this season (going from the liability he used to be to the pivotal member he is now), and on the other hand said things like: 'Then a second-half run ended with an outstanding left-footed effort that clipped the bar. His quick thinking allowed him to score the second goal, albeit controversial'. Weird, pointless and inaccurate pile of rubbish from Woolnough in my opinion.

    @ Anon:
He moans (with his rolling around for the pen being the main example)...but does he REALLY do it more than others? Especially Ronaldo and Drogba who he compared him to? I don't think so. Maybe he used to, but he's definitely not that player anymore.
