Memories… 2009/2010
I have been
meaning to do this for f**kin ages! But what with the bitter dissapointent of
the season finale, coupled with the immediate replacement of the domestic
season with the World Cup, I, ya know, couldn’t be arsed.
But now
with even the brilliant yet sporadic Rossobianchi seemingly back on the scene,
I have no excuse!
So here are my defining moments from 2009/10…
10. Hargreaves’ return –
away (1-0)
The game was over (a mediocre 1-0 win at the Stadium of Light) and the defence of our title was almost just as finished, as we all witnessed Liverpool's dismal against Chelsea end in the Champions elect f**king the Scousers right up. So to speak.
But nonetheless, the image
of Hargreaves on the touchline, ready to make his injury-time appearance against
in this, the penultimate game of the
season and his first game in over a year and a half, had every read a) shocked, b) confused or c) weeping into their dad’s
arms while screaming ‘thank you God!!!’(…what!? I was emotional, alright!?!).
9. The
Quarterfinals.
I can’t be
bothered to relieve the heartache – with both legs providing equal amounts of
bullshit – so I’ll just let you read it for yourselves here…sadistic bastards!
8. 4-0 at Home to Hull (23rd January, 2010)
I found this game meaningful for two reason.
Firstly, two of the
stars of the season – Rooney and Nani – performed wonders against
relegation-bound
Maybe not everyone’s
(or anyone’s?) notable pick for ‘moment of the season’, but I thought it acts
as a perfect representation of Rooney’s impeccable finishing of last season (as
he scored all four) and Nani’s sudden and oh so timely ‘finger out of his arse’
displays in the final half. Many cynics called this ‘the real Nani’s debut’. As
a fellow cynic, who am I to argue?
Secondly, it was the first time at Old Trafford that I had noticed the abundance of Green and Gold.
What a powerful sight.
7. Home to
in the Cup (0-1)
A crushing
reminder that something about our team last term wasn’t quite right. The truly brilliant,
United-esque performances were few and irregular, with pretty much every single
one of them being mentioned in this list (is 7/8 great performances in a season
really enough??). You also felt at times last term we got a tad lucky, with the
teams around us equally struggling to pin down consistent form.
But there
was no hiding from this pile of shite, as the
boys came back to Old Trafford for the first time in five years – this time as
a Division 1 outfit – and totally shat on us to embarrassingly, and deservedly, send us out of the FA Cup in the first round.
I have never seen a set of fans
dominate our ground as much as they did that day. Shocking.
6. At Home to Tottenham (3-1)
The last 5
games of the season were a bitch. After losing the first in the run at home to
Scholes ma Lord…’) and at home against 4th place hopefuls Tottenham,
who had just beaten Arsenal and
The
performance that followed, with yet another big-game display and brilliant goal
from Nani, was truly majestic.
At such a
challenging time of year, with pressure coming from
sort of dominating display to remind everyone that our season wasn’t quite over.
