Green and Gold…but what are we being sold?

As much as I admire the current Green & Gold campaign –
remembering the roots of United, in the form of Newton Heath – I have been
reluctant to give in and sport the scarf.

Not because I tend to sit on the fence when it comes to the
more political matters in the game, and not even because the colours clash horribly
with my trainers (which they do), but because the irony of all this is that we
are being forced to spend more money in order to protest about the Glazer’s handling
of United’s finances. And something about that really p*sses me off.

I was first alerted to this grim realisation after reading
Jim White’s piece in the Telegraph. Up until that point, I just completely assumed this was organised by United's supporters trust; but in reality, not a penny made from the selling of those scarves
or those fancy new green yellow and green t-shirts is supporting MUST. So lucrative is the selling of all things green and gold that I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest if the Megastore, the retail heaven of
the worlds biggest sporting franchise, starts to sell them!

So the clever bastard who cottoned on to this growing trend
(and I mean growing; there were literally thousands inside Old Trafford waving the scarf
around) could be having a hearty old chuckle and wiping his tears of joy away
with a fifty for all we know. He might not even be a United fan; or as a mate of
mine so crudely put it, ‘it's probably the Glazer’s themselves’. Hmm.

Well, as I said, I don’t sit on the fence; not when it comes
to the Glazer’s and NOT when it comes to my club being mis-treated…so I bought
a scarf. But instead of thinking of myself as yet another faceless feature
inside the vicinity of Old Trafford (as for once, you were an
outcast if you wore red and white); I became yet another recruit and yet
another supporter. And that’s, I hope, why people are joining in. Not because
they’re jumping on any sort of masked capitalist movement, but because that
iconic piece of clothing wrapped around their necks or being held proudly over
their heads represents the love for their club. And as much as I disliked being told ‘Ah, I see you’re
with us’ when a MUST volunteer was about to talk me into supporting the cause - suggesting that if I hadn't forked out a fiver for the scarf, then I wasn't - I know it's all for the good of the club. And that's all that matters. That's all that ever matters.

If you care about United, show it properly. Join here and buy you're scarves from here.

  1. The major issue I have with the "Glazers out" movement is they are still our best and only option right now. I would rather we save the movement for when we have an out, a genuine stable out.

  2. I want the Glazers out but i cannot bring myself to wear the green and gold, it feels like i am selling out my red past.
That red means so much to me and if i am the only one still wearing it, then so be it.
Its my life, its my blood, its my religion.

THE TEAM OF OLD WHO WORE GREEN & GOLD
WHO THEY WERE, WAS NO GREAT MYSTERY
THEN ONE FINE DAY THEY SLIPPED AWAY
A NEW TEAM WAS BORN AND NEW HISTORY

WORKING MEN WHO WERE BORN AND BRED
PUT ON THE SHIRT OF BLAZEN RED
THEY WENT AND PLAYED AND NEVER GAVE UP
SOME DIED IN THE FLIGHT FOR THAT CUP

SO NOW WHEN YOU LOOK AND YOU SEE THAT SHIRT
REMEMBER ITS MADE FROM BLOOD, SWEAT, TEARS AND DIRT
WE'VE STRUGGLED FROM THE BEGINNING BECAUSE THATS OUR WAY,
BUT THAT MAKES UNITED WHAT THEY ARE TODAY.

  3. Anonymous - Different shirt but one history. If you can't wear the G&G ask yourself what are you prepared to save the FUTURE of your club. Nothing is not an option.

  4. Good comments guys.
I think the issue isn't so much whats happening now, or what HAS happened, because as much as some of us wouldn't like to admit it we've pretty much gone through the most successful period of the clubs history under the Glazers - and they HAVE always provided the money for new players. It's just whats going to happen next? How far is this going to go? And when will the debt start seriuosly affecting our club (some argue it already has with the selling of our best player)? These are the questions that worry the fans.

  5. I have to laugh at the queue of people wearing the G&G picking up the half time pies and beers.. You will never know where that £5 for the scarf ended up but the money spent at in the ground??
